Who doesn't like Great Tits?
Within our family we refer to Great Tits as Chickadees, but for good reasons:
1. This is the common name in North America, and I am a Canadian expat.
2. "Chickadee" is more fun for our five year old to say, while the former is more fun for, never mind.
There are more than 30 different classifications of Tits, most of which are grey and black while some of the European birds have the yellow chest, seen above. Though they don't often stray far from where they hatched, Tits have quite a wide range and can be found in many countries, thus, are one of the mostly widely studied birds. In fact, the longest running study began in 1930 and continues to this day.
The Chickadee/Great Tit and a handful of birdseed can be an excellent introduction to birds for curious kids. Due to a long history of close proximity to humans, when they are comfortable enough, they may climb right into your hand to eat.
